Frequently Asked Questions
What pickleball gear do I need to start playing?
At minimum you need a paddle and a ball. Court shoes are strongly recommended to prevent ankle injuries. Many public courts have nets already set up. A beginner can get started for under $100 with a quality mid-range paddle ($50-80) and a pack of balls ($12-15).
How much does a good pickleball paddle cost?
Beginner paddles range from $30-80, intermediate paddles $80-200, and professional paddles $200-380. The sweet spot for most recreational players is $80-150. Expensive paddles offer better materials and performance but a $100 paddle is more than enough for most players.
Do I need special shoes for pickleball?
Yes — court shoes designed for lateral movement are important. Running shoes lack lateral support and increase ankle injury risk. Tennis shoes, volleyball shoes, or dedicated pickleball shoes all work well. Look for non-marking soles required by most indoor facilities.
What is the difference between indoor and outdoor pickleballs?
Outdoor balls have 40 smaller holes, are harder, heavier (0.9 oz), and resist wind. Indoor balls have 26 larger holes, are softer, lighter (0.8 oz), and offer better control. You need different balls depending on where you play.
How often should I replace my pickleball paddle?
Most paddles last 1-3 years with regular play. Signs you need a new paddle: dead spots on the face, visible cracks or delamination, reduced pop or spin, or loose edge guard. Tournament players may replace paddles annually.
