Court Etiquette Matters
Good etiquette makes pickleball more enjoyable for everyone. Whether you're playing at a public park or a private club, following these unwritten rules will help you make friends and be welcomed back.
The 10 Essential Rules
1. Rotate Courts Fairly
At busy courts, games are typically played to 11 points, then players rotate. Winners stay on, but switch sides so everyone gets to play with different partners.
2. Call the Score Loudly
Before serving, announce the score clearly. In doubles, call your team's score first, then opponents', then the server number.
3. Call "Ball On" Immediately
If a ball rolls onto your court during play, stop immediately and call "ball on." Safety comes first.
4. Respect the Paddle Rack System
Many courts use a paddle queue system. Place your paddle in line and wait your turn.
5. Don't Coach During Play
Save tips and advice for between games. Coaching during play is distracting and considered poor form.
6. Own Your Line Calls
Make honest calls, and when in doubt, the ball is in.
7. Retrieve Balls Safely
Wait for a point to finish before crossing behind other courts.
8. Control Your Emotions
Keep frustration in check. Excessive celebrating or complaining disrupts the positive atmosphere.
9. Introduce Yourself
Say hello to new players and welcome beginners.
10. Thank Your Opponents
After each game, thank your opponents and partners.
